I’m not sure whether it’s the beaming, emotional honorees or the meticulously prepared montages, but every year, when CBS broadcasts the Kennedy Center Honors, I always surprise myself by shedding a tear a two. It’s one of my favorite, weep-filled nights of television.
This year, my family calendar had marked the broadcasting day well in advance, and we congregated around the TV with tissue boxes and sugar-heavy treats galore. Michelle Obama looked radiant, as always, in a strapless Marchesa gown in Pantone’s color of the year, emerald. Broadway and big screen native Anna Kendrick was stunning in scarlet both on the red carpet and while belting it on stage. And let’s not forget the 2013 honorees themselves—opera diva Martina Arroyo, jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, Oscar-winning triple-threat Shirley MacLaine and hall of fame rockers Billy Joel and Carlos Santana.
