Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill’s bromance might be the central relationship in the highly anticipated 22 Jump Street —out on Friday—but the undercover officers can’t resist mixing business and pleasure when Jonah Hill’s Schmidt meets Maya, a cute artsy co-ed played by the ebullient Amber Stevens.
When Stevens, 27, stopped by Lucky to talk fashion, beauty, and her upcoming wedding, it was a real struggle for me not to spend the whole time chatting about her most well-known role on the show Greek, which concluded its four-year run on ABC Family in 2011. (All I’m going to say is that it’s hilarious, has great characters and is available on Netflix now.)
Stevens dashed in from the rain wearing black Zara coated skinny jeans, a tailored white H&M blouse, an AllSaints leather jacket and grey Nike running shoes and confirmed what you might expect—shooting scenes with Jonah Hill without losing composure is almost impossible. “There were so many times when we were like, ‘Give us a second—we’ve got to get the giggles out, because this is so silly,’” says the star.
Stevens’ Maya is a “cool art student” with a hip and effortless style that makes her stand out from the rest of the college crowd. “I’m always in tons of jewelry, lots of midi rings and bracelets. It’s a Rag & Bone kind of vibe.”
In real life, the rising star’s style is less boho and more classic. “I wear a lot of black and white. I do love to play with patterns but mostly I love tailored clothes that look really sharp.”
The same aesthetic applies to her dress for her wedding this December to actor Andrew J. West, who played her love interest on Greek. “I bought the simplest and most plain dress that’s ever existed,” she says. “It’s strapless and the cool thing about it is the top kind of points up and has an angle to it, instead of just the usual sweetheart neckline. So simple, but I love it.” After several failed trips to bridal stores (“the more embellished and beautiful it was on the hanger, the tackier I looked in it”), Stevens says she finally found the dress for a bargain at a boutique outlet store in L.A. called Glamour Closet. “I’m going to wear it for one night only, so I’d rather spend a lot of money on making the party a blast.”
But her one indulgence? “I want to wear a veil, for sure. I’m a ‘veil bride,’ and I want it to be at least floor-length!”
But before she ties the knot, Stevens has a second film coming out this summer—Jessabelle is a horror flick that takes place in the swamps of Louisiana and sees her wandering around a creepy old mansion. It’s quite a departure for the traditionally comedic actress. “I’m the evil person in the movie,” she says. “It was really fun.”
