Andreja Pejic (formerly Andrej), the silph-like 22-year-old that broke new ground as an androgynous high fashion model for both men’s and womenswear, announced yesterday that she underwent sex reassignment surgery earlier this year and is now living openly as a transgender woman.
Pejic has offered open-ended responses to questions of gender in the past, telling New York in 2011 that she left it "open to artistic interpretation." But yesterday on ET, she set the record straight, saying, "I thought transition was about becoming this new person, but then I realized that my past as an androgynous model doesn’t make me any less of a woman today. And I’m proud of it."
One proud moment in particular, she tells People, was being cast as the bride in Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring 2011 couture show—a gig that secured her place in the upper echelons of modeling and opened up the conversation about gender in the industry, paving the way for people like Casey Legler, a woman signed to Ford’s men’s board, and the cast of trans models that star in Barney’s spring 2014 campaign.
"Every day is like a new revelation," says Pejic. "I’m more comfortable than ever. I feel at a 100 percent." Mazel Tov!
