Happy holiays! ‘Tis the season for giving, for getting and, apparently in the fashion world, for leaving your longtime design post.
Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester announced this morning via a PDF of a handwritten letter that she would be leaving the eponymously-named label after nearly 20 years at its helm. "A new time is coming both for my personal life and the brand Ann Demeulemeester," she wrote. "[The brand has] its own identity and legacy that is able to continue growing without me."
No official word yet on who’s going to replace Demeulemeester as the label’s chief designer, though our eyes are on Demeulemeester’s longtime managing director, Anne Chapelle. Chapelle, who took a majority stake in Demeulemeester’s label in 2005, has been its director since 1994 and surely has the best sense of who can continue the eccentric, recognizable line.
Ann Demeulemeester will continue to show both women’s and men’s Fall/Winter 2014 collections together on January 27, 2014 at Paris Fashion Week.
