I got married last year, but it took us six months to finally take our honeymoon—partly because of a dearth of vacation time, and also because we needed to refill our coffers since I do a majority of my shopping when I’m on the road. Sure there’s the internet and all, but 90 percent of the time, you just can’t get the same stuff back home—and that is the only prompt I need to spend, spend, spend. We started our trip in Hong Kong, which is kind of a grander Las Vegas (you can read about Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 here)—it seems like they’re closing the gap on having one Chanel per citizen—before moving on to Bali, where we ate, drank, and browsed the local crafts scene. It was there that I fell in love with local chainlet, Uluwatu, which sells Balinese lace tops, dresses, and tap shorts (like the one in this month’s column in the magazine). I went back twice and bought this traditional lace blouse (I’ve been wearing mine belted under an army jacket, and layered under thin sweaters), and also this little vest, which is the only thing a basic tank dress needs. They’ve clearly got it together over there, because their site is fully optimized to ship to the states—you don’t have to do price conversions or anything. Get in there!
You might remember Elise Loehnen from her long stint on staff at Lucky—these days, she lives in Venice, California with her husband and cats and edits the shopping site Beso.com. She also writes our Web Obsessions section in the magazine.
