In a tiny apartment closet, there’s only so much room for shoes. Chunky-heeled booties and slip-on sneakers live side by side on my closet floor, scrunched together as efficiently as possible. Moving to New York has forced me to edit my sprawling shoe collection to a carefully curated assortment that brings me joy, with ballet flats reigning supreme as the majority footwear of choice. At least 50 percent of my floor space is dedicated to the round-nosed, the bow-adorned, the floral (and striped and basic black) ballerina.
But at a recent web meeting, I was awakened from my ballet flat reverie when a fellow editor declared that wearing them with skinny jeans was “out.” (Yep, I was wearing my trusty slippers and black skinnies at the time.) Instead of slinking off to hide my flats-of-shame, I chose to defend the shoe’s now tenuous reputation, listing its versatility and comfort as virtues. My co-worker responded that there are actually “new ways” to wear ballet flats, so the shoe style isn’t completely defunct (thank goodness, but honestly, I would have kept sporting ‘em regardless).
Whether you’re wearing the classic ballerina-inspired flats the “old” way or the “new” way, at least we can all agree that there are some pretty awesome styles out there right now. In the spirit of revitalizing the classic, click through the slideshow above to shop 19 pairs of ballet flats sure to rekindle the love. (And for all you ballet flat lovers out there, stay strong!)
