Banana Republic is getting a major facelift, starting with the position at the helm of its retail and revenue: creative director. Gap Inc., which serves as Banana Republic’s parent organization, has tapped the insanely talented Marissa Webb to join the brand as its creative director and executive vice president of design.
Webb, who served as J.Crew’s head designer for more than a decade, will start April 28 and oversee Banana Republic’s global product design for both women’s and men’s. Interestingly, the brand is reported to have also taken a minority stake in Webb’s own contemporary label, which is now sold in more than 30 stores nationwide—which proves that Webb’s own line isn’t going anywhere.
We’ll be watching Banana Republic as it inevitably attempts to transition into more of a direct J.Crew competitor.
