Last Christmas, Barneys New York wowed us with its festive homage to Mother Monster, Gaga’s Workshop. But this November 14, the famed department store will unveil a slightly more family-friendly campaign: a tribute to Walt Disney entitled Electric Holiday.
For starters, a team of Disney artists will create a "moving art short" and light display for the windows of Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship. As shoppers enter the store, they’ll be greeted with a 3-D light show as well as more moving artwork. Plus, Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino—who scored films like Up and Ratatouille—will create an original score to accompany the whole display.
But here’s where things get really interesting: Electric Holiday‘s windows will reimagine Mickey and Minnie Mouse, along with other Disney characters, as runway models who take to the Paris catwalks in looks by Balenciaga, Balmain, Lanvin and more (check out Minnie, Goofy and Daisy’s model alter egos below). Real-life industry insiders, from designers to makeup artists to notable editors, will also be making cameos in the fantasy fashion show. “The legendary characters and world created by Disney live in the active mind and memory of virtually every citizen of the world,” said Mark Lee, Barneys’ CEO, in this morning’s press release. “Barneys New York has been privileged to collaborate with Disney and its remarkable talents this holiday season on the Electric Holiday campaign, which places these iconic characters into the center of our fashion world.” Guess it really is a small world after all.
Since Barneys wouldn’t be Barneys without an awesome array of giftables, the store will also roll out an exclusive collection of Disney-minded holiday items. Among the goodies up for grabs? Vinylmation figurines designed by the Diane von Furstenberg and Mickey Mouse ears created by Rag & Bone.
