Ladies and gentlemen, we live in a world in which a 38-year-old British actor of the stage and screen is outselling the music world’s reigning king and queen. Get ready for the facts, whether you like them or not. Sherlock and 12 Years a Slave star Benedict Cumberbatch is headlining an upcoming London production of Hamlet as the title character. While the show isn’t set to hit London’s Barbican Centre until summer 2015, it’s already beating a certain power couple’s ticket sales in a dramatic fashion. That duo, of course, would be Beyoncé and Jay Z, who are currently on the road for their On the Run tour.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, mega-ticket marketplace Viagogo registered 214 percent more ticket searches for Hamlet than for Jayoncé’s Parisian pit stop on September 12-13. Yes, that’s 214 percent.
“The tragedy has instead become the success story for theater in 2015,” said a Viagogo spokesperson in a statement. “But will Benedict be or not be a worthy Hamlet—that is the question.”
In any case, it looks like there’s a new Queen Bey(nedict) across the pond.
