Remember how thrilled you were when your friend’s boyfriend finally popped the question last fall? Well, try to reclaim some of that excitement now that the big day is around the corner and you’ve got to find a dress to accomodate your pregnant belly.
Dressing for formal occasions while expecting can be kind of stressful—you don’t really know what size you’ll be until pretty close to the event, and the options for stylish mamas-to-be are seriously limited. Add hormones and hot weather to the equation, and you’ve got a bit of a dressing conundrum on your hands. Here’s how we suggest you handle this sartorial bugaboo: wait as long as you possibly can to get a dress. That way you’ll have a better handle on what size your belly will be, and you’ll know exactly what your options are. Don’t limit yourself to maternity dresses exclusively, either—an airy, beachy wedding that isn’t black tie means you can totally get away with a maxi dress in an elegant color and sexy (and comfy) gladiator sandals. If you do have to go ultra-formal, you can consider renting a dress, too, since it kind of stinks to spend a ton of money on an item you know you won’t be reaching for again. We suggest you stick to soft fabrics that won’t constrict your middle too much—jersey and modal are a pregnant gal’s best friend. Body-con dresses can be suprisingly flattering for the second and third trimester, when you’ve got some serious décolletage and that cute bump to parade around. Just don’t forget the right undergarments.
