There’s Coachella, there’s Ultra, there’s Lollapalooza and then there’s Burning Man. Ah, Burning Man, how do I describe thee? As more or less the ultimate festival for the counterculture crowd, Burning Man attracted nearly 66,000 participants to its northern Nevada fairgrounds this past week. Whatever Coachella claims to do best, Burning Man does in complete and utter excess: the weeklong celebration describes itself as “an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance.”
There’s nary a flower crown nor a Ferris wheel in sight. Instead, Burning Man does it up with body paint, outrageous costumes and larger-than-life art installations. In sum: its ostentatious nature is something of a fashion person’s dream. To wit, A-list industry peeps like Derek Blasberg, Poppy Delevingne and Candice Swanepoel made the trek to the Black Rock Desert to join in on the festivities—and we catalogued their adventures for you here, via Instagram.
