Did you know that Chanel’s trademark tweed was initially inspired by the founding designer’s frequent trips to Scotland, where she discovered the fabric? Or that the company’s celebrated 2.55 bag was named for the date of its creation?
We learned these facts and more while indulging in the exhaustively researched timeline on the brand’s new micro-site, Inside.chanel.com.
The page contains a giant timeline that begins with the birth of Gabrielle Chanel in 1883 and ends in 2012 with the recent debut of Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld’s Little Black Jacket book and exhibit. But the most fascinating stuff is in between the two. Each year includes background info on what the brand was up to at that time, accompanied a vintage photograph or—later on—archival videos. It’s worth visiting just to watch some of the old fragrance commercials from the ’80s and ’90s—one of features a whistling model perching in a birdcage while a hungry looking kitty cat looks on. (What this has to do with perfume, we’re not sure—but who cares? It’s AWESOME.) There’s also a whole section dedicated to the label’s first-ever scent, N°5, which Mademoiselle Chanel called "a woman’s perfume with a woman’s scent."
