Christian Louboutin slipped onto my radar about five years ago, when I began to notice all these really cool girls wearing pumps with red soles. It seemed like this secret club that only very stylish people with the same limitless footwear funds as Carrie Bradshaw could join. I had to have a pair of my own.
One budget-depleting pair of slouchy Loub boots and some 80-percent-off peep-toe wedges later, the brand started to seem a lot less secret and much more clubby. I couldn’t go out at night, open a gossip magazine or watch ten minutes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians without seeing the label’s crimson-bottomed shoes. The only place I stopped spotting them was on the masterfully disheveled artist types who’d inspired me in the first place.
According to the Daily Mail, it seems that a lot of celebrities have also moved on. Whereas Mr. Louboutin’s designs were once de rigueur on the red carpet, most stars have become Charlotte Olympia converts. Sofia Vergara, Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore all showed up to the SAG Awards last weekend wearing Charlotte’s creations, and both Taylor Swift and Alexa Chung own her infamous cat flats. (As do I.) Jemima Kirke of Girls has a pair, too, but her endorsement is a little biased, as she’s Charlotte’s cousin.
But does this all mean I should give up my Louboutins for good? I don’t plan on it, although mine have been in storage for awhile, waiting for that hard-to-find fashion moment when they feel exclusive again. But it’ll happen—I’d bet my Charlotte Olympia kitty loafers on it.
Agree? Disagree? I want to know if you are Team Charlotte or Team Christian! Sound off in the comments below.
