Some trends come and go, but beachy waves are simply never out of style. Though our obsession with the look is well documented, it’s one of those styles that no matter how many tips and tricks you learn, there’s no tried-and-true way to copy the look—you just need to find the perfect combo of products and tips that works for your hair type. Admittedly, this holy grail of hairstyles can be frustrating to perfect, but just when we were going to throw in the towel (or rather, the curling iron!), we spotted this perfectly tousled look on Chloë Grace Moretz from last night’s Teen Choice Awards—and knew we couldn’t quit trying.
Luckily, Moretz’s stylist Gregory Russell was happy to help us out, recommending a unique tool that we surprisingly had never heard of before. To recreate the look, Russell first recommends blow drying your hair using a damage-preventing ceramic brush and then sectioning the hair in half. "I sprayed each section with a heat protectant spray and twisted it away from her face, holding the ends and aiming it with a brow dryer and a Hot Sock diffuser," said Russell. Sure, a Hot Sock isn’t the cutest thing to keep in your bathroom closet, but the diffuser, which you can attach to the nozzle of any standard blow dryer, assists in drying curly hair with minimum frizz by evenly distributing heat.
After the hair is cooled, use a 1-1/4" curling iron to curl the hair in random, opposite directions to give it a more natural feel. "I loosened the waves more by pulling down the ends with my hands and blasted them with the Hot Sock diffuser on the blow dryer again for a more lived-in look," said Russell.
Finish it off with dry shampoo for a matte, messy texture and long-lasting hairspray so people can admire your hair look all day long (as they should!).
