Every year—or at least every other year—I try to pick up a great new coat that I know I’ll wear all through the following fall and winter. The coat in question tends to be an investment buy—after all, if it’s the first piece everyone will see you wearing and you’ll be sporting it multiple days per week for months at a time, it’s natural to want to spend a bit more on it. But over the past decade, I’ve somehow wound up choosing a black, navy or brown option every single time. "It’ll match everything!" I tell myself. "Dark colors are less recognizable, so nobody will notice I haven’t rotated coats in weeks!"
This year, however, I plan to switch things up. I fell particularly hard for the pastel coats on the runways last February, but there are also tons of gorgeous jewel tones and eye-popping brights trickling into stores right now—and all of them make a serious case for busting out of that neutral-hued rut and buying a colorful coat this year. Click through above for my favorite options at every price point, from under $100 to over $2,000. Whether you favor a lipstick red version, a cobalt coat or a tangerine-hued topper, you’re sure to find one you love.
