I’ve had short hair for years, and I generally cut it myself. Crazy? Probably, but I just don’t have the time or the budget to go to the salon once every two weeks (which is about how long it takes my hair to go from gamine pixie to fluffy disaster).
This weekend at a friend’s beautiful beach house in the Hamptons, I met Rene Fris. The name might not ring a bell, but believe me, once you’ve set eyes on this man, you’ll never forget him: He’s the Danish hair stylist who was on that Bravo show “Shear Genius," and other than his piercing blue eyes and razor-sharp wit, the man knows his way around a head of hair.
As soon as he saw my home-made haircut, he dragged me to a chair for a quick fix. After spending about twenty minutes turning butch into beauty, he gave me a tutorial on how to do it myself at home. I’d always kept it longer on top and shorter on the sides, but he told me that the opposite is much prettier—shorter on top and longer on the sides highlights the angles of your face and enhances that pixie Mia Farrow air. Honestly though, I think I’ll start going to him regularly, if for nothing else than the chance to drool over him and listen to his tales of meeting the Danish Queen.
