I stumbled upon hidden-gem Dagny + Barstow when strolling along the Bowery just out of the bounds of New York City’s shopping-centric Nolita neighborhood. Besides being drawn in by all the fashionable goodies, I was immediately charmed by owners Meredith Blank and Emily Titelman, who made me feel right at home while I perused the racks. It didn’t hurt that the store’s unofficial mascot, Howie, an adorable French Bulldog mix, greeted me enthusiastically. The girls have a really cool edit of up-and-coming New York designers, like Dusen Dusen and Timo Weiland, as well as offbeat international names, like Romance Was Born and Swash London. They’ve also got killer accessories, including Thierry Lasry sunglasses and masterpieces from a bunch of European jewelry designers, such as Maria Nilsdotter and Alice Hubert. (Bonus: Dagny + Barstow is the only retailer in New York where you can find those last two.) I was also struck by all the impressive artwork on the walls, which turned out to be the result of a collaboration with Artstar.com, offering local artists’ work for sale. So next time you’re cruising down Bowery be sure to pop in to this adorable boutique—if not for a splurge on clothes or art, then at least to say hi to Howie.
(And if you’re not in the New York area, don’t worry! You can shop from their awesome website.)
