He’s only been in office for a day, but New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has already made a statement regarding the Big Apple’s fashion industry—and it’s in his wife and daughter’s coats. De Blasio’s wife of 19 years, Chirlane McCray, and their daughter, 19-year-old Chiara de Blasio, stepped out at NYC’s mayoral inauguration yesterday wearing very distinct pieces of outwear, both designed by New York-based designer Nanette Lepore.
Lepore first gave the de Blasio family a tour of her studio during his campaign last year, during which she advocated for keeping fashion manufacturing in the city—as opposed to moving it overseas where production may be cheaper. Fast forward through the election, and Chirlane and Chiara were so impressed that the de Blasio camp reached out to Lepore for inauguration clothing options. And as far as political events go, a January inauguration outfit (see also: Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama) is all about one item: the coat.
"Chiara and I are proud to wear this beautiful clothing today, that was made right here in New York City," Chirlane said in a statement. "This city needs more creative entrepreneurs like Nanette Lepore who are committed to keeping our city’s garment industry thriving.”
