Every day, we get tons of questions from our readers about what to buy and how to wear it. Our Facebook page, Twitter feed and email inboxes are perpetually packed with your queries—and as editors, it’s our job to help you navigate these tricky real-life dressing scenarios with ease (and style, of course). Read on for today’s inquiry!
Q: I LOVE crossbody bags! But how do you stop them from catching on tops? The style seems to rub or catch on every shirt I wear—by the end of the day, it’s always holey or worn.
The first thing we did after reading this question was seek the expertise of Lucky‘s Accessories Director, Julia Kalachnikoff. Although, like her official title suggests, Julia test drives all kinds of accessories for the magazine (shoes, jewelry and hats included), we know her to be something of a handbag connoisseur. In May 2011, she carried a different style from her personal collection every single day for one month straight—and, no, she didn’t run out of options. She didn’t even come close.
Just as we hoped, Julia had a very quick and very smart answer: "Look for one without any hardware, especially buckles on the strap." If you don’t have any sharp edges, nothing will pull or snag! The wider the strap, the better, too; that will keep friction (and therefore pilling and holes) to a minimum. Also she suggested avoiding bag-to-shirt contact altogether by finding a style that hits more at the hip than at the waist.
We’ve found you six different options based on Julia’s advice for both mini (under $100) and massive ($1,000+) budgets. Click through the slideshow above to shop each one now. (And if you have have the extra cash, and love the $1,574 hot pink Nancy Gonzalez on the last slide, why not go for it? Just think of all the money you’re saving by not ruining your tops anymore!)
