Marilyn Monroe made it look easy, with Chanel No 5 and her naked self in bed. But bear in mind that there were far, far fewer opportunities for Marilyn to stray back then: There was a Chanel No 5 and perhaps a Shalimar here and a White Shoulders there—nothing like the exponential, another-one-born-every-second fragrance industry of today.
Yes. Unequivocally, it is forever cool to have a signature scent. Having a signature means you are a woman who absolutely knows herself, who embodies the idea that elegance is refusal, who’s decisive and bursting with confidence. Will you be missing out if you restrict yourself, glamorously, to a single scent? Yes, you will miss out. But you will be so elegant in your refusal, if you can stick to it!
One day I feel like flowers (Hermès Calèche); the next day I’m wanting the ocean (Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis); the next day, citrus (Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine). But it’s not just the scent that makes me unfaithful; sometimes it’s the name (Ce Soir Ou Jamais by Annick Goutal, Carnal Flower by Frédéric Malle) or the package (who can resist, say, Miss Dior or classic Acqua di Parma?). Or I love the celebrity! Or the fashion designer!
Next, I swear, it will be chef fragrances! And I will want them all! I tell myself it’s because I’m a beauty editor, but I think it’s actually just my personality.
I really wish I had Marilyn Monroe’s resolve in the fragrance department.
