After working with Narciso Rodriguez on an Istanbul-themed collection, Kohl’s has tapped Derek Lam to continue its DesigNation project, a series of high-end collaborations based on different places around world. Lam’s capsule line is inspired by Rio de Janeiro, one of his favorite destinations.
"I really love the city," he told WWD. "The people are wonderful and the setting is amazing."
When visiting the spot earlier this year, the designer looked to the city’s beach culture, botanical gardens and art museums for ideas. This wide net of influence is reflected in the clothes by way of a rich palette—colors include jungle green, aquamarine, yellow, nude and orange sorbet—and prints that reference Brazilian graphic artist Hélio Oiticica.
Narciso’s creations don’t hit stores until November 7, which means we’ll have to wait even longer to see what Derek cooked up. (April of 2013, to be exact.) But patience certainly is a virtue in this case: everything will cost between $36 and $98. "Accessibility is no longer the opposite of luxury," he said.
