Hear me out: I’m all for a good fashion sneaker, and in theory, Christian Dior’s water shoes should be no different. When Karl Lagerfeld sent those tweed, $4,000-plus sneaks down Chanel’s Spring 2014 Couture runway, I was completely smitten—but as of now, I can’t quite get behind the Dior versions. Retailing for $1,100, the “Fusion” sneakers should have immediately left me breathless, but I’m not exactly there just yet.
Earlier this month, the French fashion house put out a video showcasing the beginning-to-end process of assembling said sneakers, starting from a breathy sketch on a notepad to the placement of the soles. That being said, if there’s one thing that can transform me from skeptic to supporter, it’s a good ol’ fashioned peek at an atelier’s creative process. $1,100 is starting to look like a steal.
