I’ve recently learned that one out of every four women doesn’t know how to use hair oils (or she worries it will weigh down her hair and make it feel greasy). Before I tried Dove’s new Pure Care Dry Oil Treatment, I never realized I was part of such a large statistic. Hair oils certainly aren’t a new thing. Though they’ve become a popular secret weapon for hairstylists, especially in the past few years, hair oils have literally been around for centuries.
I have thicker hair, so the weight of it makes my hair lose volume easily, and the thought of oil going anywhere near my roots and flattening it out had me running for the hills. That is, until Dove’s celebrity stylist Mark Townsend and his assistant Katie convinced me that the brand’s latest hair treatment would do no such thing, with lightweight ingredients like African macadamia oil and omega-7 acids. After all, Mark’s worked his magic on hair muses like Lea Michele, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon, so I knew I was in good hands.
Sure enough, Mark knew what he was talking about: My hair has never felt silkier and smoother even in this harsh, dry winter air New York City has been facing lately. I’ve incorporated the new Dove oil into my hair routine every day since he introduced me to it—mostly because there are many genius ways you can use it.
- My favorite is to use it post-shower to lock in hydration. I have long hair, so I rub about five or six pumps into my palms and slick my hair back as if I’m putting it up into a ponytail. Then I use a couple more pumps for the ends. I like to let my hair air dry for at least 10-15 minutes before blow drying, and it seems to be the perfect amount of time to let the oil sink in.
- You can also use it before you wash your hair, like a mask. Massage it in your hair for about half an hour before shampooing.
- Mix it in with your conditioner to enhance its properties—it’ll make your hair extra silky.
