Jo Scapa, the founder of Los Angeles-based e-boutique Alleycattrade.com, seeks out fashion from the farthest corners of the globe. In addition to stocking her online store with some of our favorite foreign labels like Rodebjer, Ksubi and Surface to Air, as well as hard-to-find Alice McCall and Magdalena Velevska.
In short, if you never want to be caught in the same dress as your friends, AlleyCat’s your new go-to. We caught up with Scapa (pictured at left) to find out which under-the-radar pieces make her tick—and how she goes about the business of e-retail.
We love AlleyCat’s mix of exotic labels. How do you go about sourcing your stock?
I find my designers my scouring the online world, from blogs to news articles to a few secret sources. It’s important for AlleyCat Trade to feature and promote emerging talent. However, it is also essential that whatever I put on the site is absolutely wearable. It’s a very fine line, but I seem to be walking the tightrope pretty well.
What are some of your bestselling pieces so far?
The fitted and georgeously printed Alice McCall dresses (I am the exclusive distributer in the U.S.) and Anniel’s perfect ballet flats (including muticolored glitter flats that literally want to make you click your heels). And I carry the best of the best from Parisian brand Surface to Air, everything from coats to denim to shoes. The line is not only one of my favorites, but super-wearable and very distinctive.
What are a few items you loved so much that you bought them for yourself?
Alice McCall’s "Vice Regent" dress with the cutout heart in the back. I literally cannot get enough of this dress—and cannot get enough compliments from it either. It’s girly and sexy, and I’m obsessed. It’s perfect paired with booties or gladiator sandals. I also love Surface to Air’s "Paul Zipped V2" booties—they’re the quintessential "cool girl" booties that can go from summer to fall and back again. They’re beyond versatile and go with everything and anything. Lastly, Laura Urbinati’s halter one-piece swimsuit with tortoise ring detail. It’s perfect for the beach or a pool party when worn with our leopard Ksubi cutoffs. And the beautiful material makes it feel like you’re wearing close to nothing. Ooh la la!
