It’s been a long time since the old adage that "men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses" held any water—but even if it did, what of it? Glasses are great.
Not only for the obvious reasons (i.e. helping you see) but also because frames can transform a face in ways no other accessory can. Feel like channeling a vampy pinup? The right cat-eyes will get you there in an instant. In more of a collegiate mood? Tortoiseshell Clubmasters have Dead Poet’s Society written all over them.
I’ve been wearing glasses for five years now—a relatively short time, given I come from a family of prescription lens lifers—and I barely even miss my old 20/20 vision. Granted, my prescription is light, so the worst thing that happens when I forget them is awkward encounters with strangers I confuse with friends from a distance.
For now, I switch it up between a pair of awesome (albeit unpronounceable) clear-framed Han Kjøbenhavns and some Buddy Holly-ish Ray-Bans. And while I could (and probably should) try out contacts some time, I’d much rather put the money towards a new pair of frames. With companies like Warby Parker churning out new styles by the dozen, designers like Cynthia Rowley entering the fray with reasonably priced optical lines and boutique brands like Cutler and Gross courting big spenders with lust-worthy eyewear, there’s never been a better time to rock the four-eyes look.
