Two months ago, 25-year-old Wes Gordon won the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star award. Last month, he showed another obsession-worthy collection of luxe, elegant pieces (brocade pants, cashmere coats) at New York Fashion Week and watched January Jones choose his design on Oscar night.
As if he weren’t busy enough already, this month Wes launched his first capsule collection. Unlike his namesake label, Wes’s partnership with Jones New York is far more affordable—prices range from $138 to $398—and a little more restrained.
Wes sees it as "wardrobe staples for the young working girl, who maybe needs to wear a suit to work— but doesn’t want to look like she’s 70." It’s a totally different market for him, but naturally, he’s killing it.
We caught up with Wes over the weekend to chat about the collaboration and what’s next on his agenda after such a busy season. (At this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if it were a run for the Oval Office.)
Tell us about the collaboration: how it came about, what the process was like.
It always bugs me to see my friends—those working girls who read fashion magazines, are aware of trends and wear awesome clothes on the weekends—feel like they have to surrender being cool on the other five days.
So for my collaboration with Jones, which has this amazing history of dressing working American women, I wanted to create really fresh wardobe staples for professional women. And it’s been a long process; this collection’s actually a year in the making. They’re a big organization! Very different from my small team.
If you had to pick a favorite from the capsule collection, what would it be?
The high-waisted shorts! They’re pretty much the perfect pair. Not too short, and with a little jacket, they’re a great option for the office.
Could you picture pieces from your own label mixing in with these capsule collection ones?
Where do you love to shop?
Bergdorf Goodman is so beautiful— I feel like I stand up straighter when I walk in there, and I like that. But I shop online a ton, too. I spend so much on Mrporter.com since it’s convenient. I’d have to go to four different stores to see the same things I can see there.
When you open your own store, what do you envision it looking like?
Well, I think the most beautiful store in New York is Tom Ford’s store. I’d want that sort of feel: grand and museum-like. But also with a little element of casualness. I don’t know, I’m not there yet!
But we’d bet Wes is closer than he lets on. Check out some of the pieces from his Jones New York collaboration below and shop the full range here.
