Grease, perhaps the most beloved movie musical of all time, is celebrating its 35 anniversary today. Set in the 1950s, the film boasted irresistible dance numbers, ultra-catchy songs and genius casting—which launched leads John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Jeff Conaway (RIP) and Stockard Channing into the ranks of superstardom—and was a box office smash from the get-go. One of the original tales of high school romance—Aussie exchange student Sandy Olsson is a squeaky-clean exchange student who falls in with the popular Pink Ladies, while greaser Danny Zuko cares more about fast cars and even faster girls—the story resonated with an entire generation of music-savvy nostalgics, and three decades later, we still can’t get "Summer Loving" and "You’re the One That I Want" out of our heads.
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Grease‘s incredible wardrobe, designed by Albert Wolsky. From the full midi skirts, neckerchiefs and satin jackets preferred by the Pink Ladies to the edgy T-Birds’ leather motos and cuffed jeans, the film’s clothes perfectly defined its cast of characters—and it’s hard not to notice the fact that many of the individual pieces from both gangs’ signature looks have come back in a big way recently.
