When you’re one of the most iconic department stores in the world, you can afford to go all out on your birthday. And that’s just what Bergdorf Goodman plans to do this fall. To ring in its 111th year in business, the luxury retailer is releasing its very own documentary, a book and a limited edition collection packed with more than 100 BG-exclusive pieces, according to WWD. And to tie everything together, the celebration’s slogan will be "one store, one city, one experience." (Get it? 111!)
Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin and Prada are just a few of the major labels Bergdorf’s team has tapped to create special merchandise in honor of the store’s anniversary, which is set to hit shelves on Fashion’s Night Out in September. Some of the pieces will showcase NYC- and store-centric iconography, as each participating designer was prompted with the question, "What does Bergdorf mean to you?" Meanwhile, since BG’s windows have long been hailed as some of the best in the city, special displays will celebrate moments from the store’s eleven-decade-long history. Then, during September Fashion Week, a documentary film called "Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s" will debut, along with a companion book of the same title. The tome will contain original sketches from the likes of Chanel and Lanvin, plus archival ad campaigns and personal essays by Manolo Blahnik, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Rachel Zoe, just to name a few.
Since Bergdorf’s 100th anniversary fell during September 2011, the same month as the terrorist attacks on New York City, the retailer chose not to celebrate its centennial. This will be the first anniversary BG has commemorated since 1951, but from the sound of it, the store is ready to make up for lost time in a major way.
