The opposite of pom-poms, pearls and all things pretty in pink (here’s looking at you, Glee), 1989’s Heathers is a much more dark and twisted take on high school teen drama. While Heathers performed poorly in theaters, it quickly became a cult classic. It left an indelible mark on the teen dramas to come; Beverly Hills, 90210 (and its remake) and Gossip Girl both reference the same sort of high school hierarchy. Regina George, too, likely learned how to be a mean girl by studying the Heathers handbook.
Certain scenes in this melodramatic teen movie border on ridiculousness; while watching, you can’t help but laugh. The lines are endlessly quotable ("I’ve got to motor" and "Chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, darling" are just two of my favorites) and who can forget the on-point ’80s fashion? The ensembles that Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty (later the resident mean girl of West Beverly High) and the rest of the cast wear are quintessentially ’80s—think shoulder pads, oversized blazers and brooches galore. With some slight tweaks, however, all of their looks can work just as well today as they did in the late ’80s.
From the moment the movie opens with that campy shot of Heather #1 and her red scrunchie of power, you know you’re in for a different kind of high school movie. With Heathers currently streaming on Netflix (thank you, Netflix gods) and an off Broadway musical premiering this month, there are now more ways to enjoy this cult classic than ever before.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of Heathers’ release, so let’s take a look back at all the best fashion moments. Because, how very. Click through the slideshow to see and shop the best looks from Heathers!
