Spike Jonze’s latest movie, Her, may be getting tons of buzz for its depiction of a not-so-distant future where people fall in love with their operating systems, but the one thought I had after leaving a recent screening? “Man, our clothes are going to be awesome in the future.” High-waisted tweed trousers, bright button-ups with safety pin accents and enough layers to keep this winter-loving girl happy, I found myself occasionally missing important sections of dialogue because I was so fixated on what the characters were wearing. And while Joaquin Phoenix’s wardrobe has been getting a lot of attention—Opening Ceremony even designed a capsule collection based on his looks—I think the film’s female characters deserve just as much love. Amy Adams’ graphic-printed, menswear-inspired separates and cropped trousers, Rooney Mara’s silky sleeveless, bow-bedecked top and pencil skirt, and Olivia Wilde’s scene-stealing minidress and geometric earrings all had me wishing for the future, even if it does mean worrying about how to break up with my computer without hurting its feelings.
