A pale pink lip and neutral eye are…pretty, but during Fashion Week, I want WILD. I want eyeball-scorching color—a show of exploding fireworks splitting the night sky with garish streaks. I want graphic eyes, bold lips and foot-high bouffants that you could tuck a bomb inside. What I want, I discovered backstage last night, is Anna Sui. Pat McGrath, makeup guru and creative design director for Procter and Gamble, painted thick swoops of Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire along the lash line extending it up past the eye (most mondo-exaggerated cat eye ever) and colored the lids with brazen red and blue theatrical paint to create lawless, punk-rock gorgeousness that was part swinging 60s, part anime-geisha girl. (Pat suggests using CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Indigo Impact on the lids with a wet brush to replicate the blue eye and CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipcolor in Hot to recreate the red lid. Using Lip color on eyes = best trick of all time.) “It’s a modern take on punk,” she explained, peering into a model’s face to check her liner. “Eccentric, young, rebellious—like the Sex Pistols shows that Anna used to love.” The hair—blue and pink wigs carefully pinned to cover just the top of the models’ heads to leave their own hair showing in the back—was equally outrageous. And as the girls thrashed down the runway, their hair and eyes all together forming a fantasia of brilliant, moving color, I leaned forward, on the edge of my seat—literally—and couldn’t have wished for any wilder.
