Issa had a major make-it-or-break-it moment in 2010, when Kate Middleton wore one of the British brand’s royal blue dresses while announcing her engagement. At first, the sudden influx of attention and orders nearly made the company go bankrupt. Fortunately, thanks to a few smart hires (like Camilla Al Fayed as chairwoman), high-profile partnerships (exclusive items for The Outnet) and placement online (on widely trafficked sites such as Net-a-porter), it has not only endured, but thrived. Now Issa is about to embark on what might be its biggest collaboration yet: a capsule line for Banana Republic.
Just announced on WWD this morning, the 40-piece collection—including both clothing and accessories—will debut on August 6 in over 700 stores around the world and on BR e-commerce. Everything will fall in the $39 to $150 price range and was inspired by the chain’s "safari heritage."
"We always love animal prints such as zebra and giraffe stripes," Simon Kneen, Banana Republic’s creative director and executive vice president of design, said in an interview. "Issa took that and modernized it. I love that the collection is our world and their world."
There’s so many things that are exciting about this particular news. For starters, these Issa designs will be less than half the price of its trademark twist-front sheaths and gowns, which can cost upward of $1,200. And all the designs will be much easier for anyone, anywhere, to find, as there’s a Banana Republic in nearly every mall in every city all around the world. Also, it just means that Issa is truly here to stay—and perhaps that’s the most exciting news of all.
