Soon, fans of Jason Wu‘s famously feminine sheaths and tulip skirts will be able to get a piece of their favorite designer—for less. This morning, Wu announced that he’s teaming up with Nordstrom to launch a younger, contemporary collection called Miss Wu, which will land in the department store next January. And though Nordstrom plans to carry the line exclusively in 49 locations for one year, it sounds like this is shaping up to become a permanent part of the Jason Wu brand—an accompanying accessories line is already in the works
"Instead of just doing ‘Jason Wu-for-less,’ the idea is to explore the other side of myself,” the 29-year-old designer told WWD. “I always see Jason Wu [the collection] as my aesthetic, my design sensibility. Miss Wu is my personality. It was really fun to explore that facet of who I am — slightly more downtown, and with a more relaxed attitude.”
So what can we expect from Miss Wu’s 40-piece debut collection? Inspired by French New Wave icons like Jane Birkin and Marianne Faithfull, Wu whipped up A-line dresses, striped tops and trench coats trimmed with bows. As for pricing, the line will range from $195 to $795—a far cry from Wu’s usual several-thousand-dollar cocktail looks.
"One thing that is rare in the contemporary market is more feminine, girlier clothes,” Wu explained. “It tends to be more hard-edged, or too young. I felt this is something that brings a little bit of softness.”
If the Taiwan-born designer’s recent, raved-about capsule for Target taught us (and him) anything, it’s that Jason Wu’s signature sweet aesthetic speaks to a wide range of women. We’re thrilled that we’ll soon be able to afford his clothes while still managing to pay our rent, and if the preview images at left and below are any indication, we have lots to look forward to with Miss Wu.
