Today, we lost one of the great ones. Just a couple of hours ago, it was announced that Joan Rivers had died at the age of 81. After being rushed to a New York City hospital during a routine vocal chord surgery last week, Rivers remained on life support while her daughter, Melissa Rivers, kept the world in the loop regarding her condition.
Rivers, who today is perhaps best known as a co-host for E!’s Fashion Police, was far more than a mere comedic icon. She was a mother of two, a spirited feminist, a late night television idol and everyone’s favorite red carpet mouthpiece. But perhaps most relevantly of all, she was a strong, opinionated and brassy woman—one of the few females who successfully qualify as a “broad.”
It’s no surprise, considering Rivers has probably met (and critiqued) nearly the entirety of Hollywood over the course of her decades-long career, that celebrities everywhere have been taking to Twitter to share their words of mourning.
