As one-tenth of the CFDA Fashion Incubator‘s Class of 2014, Jonathan Simkhai‘s name is perhaps one of the group’s more recognizable ones. Born and raised in New York City, Jonathan began cultivating his interest in fashion at the tender age of 14 with his first retail job. Ten-odd years later in 2010 with an education at both Parsons and FIT under his belt, he made his first professional foray into design with the debut of his womenswear collection. Under the two-year, nurturing umbrella of the CFDA, Jonathan was able to grow his craft with the provided help of studio space, business tutelage and networking seminars. Now, he and his fellow nine designers are able to be released into the industry as full-blown professionals.
In the just-released CFDA Incubator’s Digital Showcase, viewers get to take an inside look at the studios, inspiration boards and Fall 2014 collections of the group’s 10 talents, Jonathan included. "Every season I try to look at different elements of menswear and try to incorporate them into the look," he said on camera. "This season I was definitely intrigued by a dangerous woman. I did a lot of research on men’s libraries and really successful men, and I found this beautiful crocodile cigar box. There was something so sexy about it, so I started mixing the men’s fabrics with the crocodile and embossed leather."
