A staggering two billion people tuned in to last night’s "12-12-12" Superstorm Sandy relief concert broadcast, which featured performances from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. But in between all those pyrotechnics, classic rock reunions and celebrity close-ups, viewers were treated to another interesting spectacle: Kanye West. Wearing a skirt. Sure, it was layered over matching leather pants, but still.
The gender-bending garment in question was actually designed by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy’s men’s collection—although as we learned from Yeezy’s 2011 Coachella performance, during which he wore a top from Céline’s womenswear line, that the dude’s not afraid to dip into ladies’ dressing. It’s also not the first time the rapper’s been spotted in this particular piece—check out the photo above, snapped during the rapper’s 2011 Watch the Throne tour.
But until now, the only high-profile man to enthusiastically endorse the kilt has been Marc Jacobs, who’s constantly snapped wearing pleated skirts of various lengths in public (occasionally with coordinating pilgrim-style pumps). Furthermore, the designer’s decision to wear a sheer lace dress to the 2012 Met Gala resulted in Seth Meyers’ donning an identical get-up at this year’s CFDA Awards—in jest, of course.
But more and more nowadays, it seems the sartorial gender lines are blurring. Earlier this week, Business Insider discussed the growing "meggings" (yep, leggings for men) phenomenon, a look that’s already been adopted by Justin Bieber and Russell Brand. Within the envelope-pushing fashion community, it goes even further—as evident by the "men in heels" trend, which we’ve covered several times already.
So could Kanye’s skirt—which, by the way, already has its own Twitter account—be part of a larger style movement? Will Yeezy be the next celebrity "meggings"
victim supporter? Or was he simply trying to show his buddy Riccardo Tisci some love? Let us know what you think!
