The Scene: Uber-cool Kiwi designer Karen Walker may have been inspired by sea monsters and Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, but she also incorporated elements of ’60s-era mod and Victorian elegance into her fall collection.
The Look: Sweet ruffles trimmed tulip skirts and A-line dresses in dark metallic brocade, while lemon angora knits and tangerine-toned pants and shifts provided the requisite punch of color. Paisley was a huge story here, covering numerous bow-tied blouses and long-sleeved dresses, and several plaid numbers seemed fit for Clueless heroine Cher Horowitz’s closet. Walker’s outerwear was a definite highlight, especially her crisp grey coats trimmed with gold hook closures and boxy single-breasted cropped jackets. And the footwear—from the orange paisley chain-trimmed booties to the flat pointy-toed Western boots—was killer.
Pieces We Want: The show’s closing trio of shimmering gold jackets, especially one trimmed with a peplum, were gorgeous. And as with any Karen Walker collection, we are craving every single pair of kooky sunglasses she showed.
