In what just might be the ultimate supermodel collab, Karlie Kloss has teamed up with jeans label Frame to create "Forever Karlie," a two-style denim capsule tailor-made for tall girls. Comprised of a ’70s-style flare and a classic skinny cut, each with a 40-inch (!) inseam and embroidered with a tiny "K" just below the hip, the collection drops next month—and to hear the model herself tell it, the project was born entirely out of necessity.
"Even within the fashion industry, as a tall girl it’s not always easy to find clothes that fit your body," Karlie told me. "It’s not even just a model thing. It’s hard to complain about height, but its something that’s always made me really insecure. When you don’t have clothes that fit you right, it affects how you feel." And so the Forever Karlie was born. "I don’t think a 40-inch inseam has ever been done before," the model contined, gesturing down at her Forever Karlie skinnies. "The funny thing is, even on me, these jeans are a little long!"
But these styles aren’t only meant for six-foot-tall types. "The idea was to do something so extremely long that you could cut it to your own length," Karlie explained. "You can customize it, which isn’t normally an option. Usually it’s one or the other—the right fit or the right length. With these, you don’t have to compromise. It’s refreshing!" To that end, the flared style widens gradually from the knee—meaning that ladies needing to hack quite a few inches off the hemline won’t lose the style’s silhouette whatsoever.
Frame Denim cofounder Erik Torstensson told me that the collab began not during a business meeting, but over a casual meal. "We were just having dinner with Karlie, and I was telling her about our denim brand, and she said, ‘I can never find jeans!’" he explained. "I couldn’t believe it. So we started joking about doing a ‘forever’ jean—a jean that never ends. When we told the pattern-cutters in our factory what we were planning to do, they were like, ‘You’re kidding—40?!‘ It had never been done before. And it wasn’t just the length—everything had to change. The rise, where the knee is, where the rivets are placed."
"I don’t know if anyone else is gonna buy them," Karlie laughed, "but for me, these are it." Judging by the 18,500 "likes" the collab’s campaign photo has received since Karlie Instagrammed it just yesterday, we’re guessing the supermodel’s not the only one who’ll be wearing these uber-long jeans, well, forever.
The Forever Karlie capsule launches on June 1 exclusively at Net-a-Porter, Barneys, Jeffrey, Ron Herman and Selfridges.
