The Scene: The Polish designer picked Spanish bullfighters as her inspiration this season, reflecting the metador’s bravado and strength in her trademark architectural silhouettes. To further drive the theme home, models wore elaborate headpieces by Ashley Lloyd that were crafted from horns and porcupine quills.
The Look: The collection had us seeing red in the best possible sense. Rich cranberry colors mixed with classic black and navy in sharp-shouldered jackets, asymmetrical trapeze dresses and shell-style tops. Leather popped up in the form of second-skin leggings and slim pencil skirts, and Zmarlak created a haunting, almost bloodlike abstract print to splash on two numbers. As with most garments this designer creates, nearly everything shown could be reversed and worn inside-out for a different look.
Pieces We Want: A wine-and-red kneelength bustier dress seemed the perfect choice for Valentine’s Day, and a sculptural red coat set with leather panels was slightly Star Trek but thoroughly cool.
