Following the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony last Friday, Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton chatted during a reception at Buckingham Palace. Initially introduced last May, the pair seemed quite happy to see each other again as they were photographed warmly smiling and clasping hands. I can only speculate what they talked about. World peace? Their husbands’ demanding careers? Shopping? Regardless of the topic, I bet a few compliments were exchanged. Both ladies had on killer outfits.
Opting for a designer from the home country, the Duchess of Cambridge wore an icy blue coat dress by Scottish designer Christopher Kane. Although the piece had the type of tailored silhouette and conservative neckline we’re all used to seeing on Kate, the color choice was a new one. When she isn’t dressed in neutrals, K-Mid tends to favor deep blues and rich reds. This tiny fashion risk is the latest in a string of hits from the royal—she’s been appearing in a lot of high-end English labels recently, including Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.
Our First Lady’s look was also a dressed-up version of her favorite shape: the fit-and-flare. The outfit consisted of a embroidered top from J.Mendel’s Resort 2013 collection, a skirt from the same label, metallic heels and Azaara earrings, which that are still available online. (You’ll find them in the gallery!) However, instead of wearing one of her trademark cardigans, M’Obama took the opportunity to show off her toned arms (must be all those on-location Let’s Move! workouts) by leaving them uncovered and jewelry-free.
The two outfits are very different from each other, but I think they were both a big success. If you’d like to recreate either for yourself, click through the to shop similar pieces.
