Last night, we hopped the train downtown to the always-pleasant Kate Spade New York shop in SoHo. Several glasses of champagne and micro-mini-burgers later, we turned our eye towards the main attraction, the Westward Collection. This capsule of totes, clutches, duffles and handbags was designed by LA-based stylists/denim experts Emily Current and Meritt Elliott in collaboration with KSNY creative director Deborah Lloyd. The collection was created with an east coast girl’s spirtied road trip westward in mind. Of course, the term "roadtrip" piqued our interest. "The girl we had in mind drinks champagne out of a paper-cup, brings silverware to a picnic instead of paper plates and packs luxuries on a roadtrip…it’s sort of an ironic whimsy that we love," Current said of the collection.
She had us at champagne and picnics. It seems the pairing creates the perfect mix. "It was like, let’s do something and let’s start tomorrow," said Current of the first meeting with Lloyd.
So, what’s next for the seemingly unstoppable Kate Spade New York? Now that they’ve gone west, they’re going back east to London, where they’ll open a stand alone store in September. Earlier this year, the label’s accross-the-pond pop-up shop received rave reviews and Lloyd is certainly happy to be bringing the brand to her native land. (The designer hails from the UK.) "It’s going home in a very proud, exciting way…it’s going to be very special."
In the market for a new handbag? Current, Elliott and Lloyd reveal their top picks from the collection:
