In my wheelhouse of cinematic memories, Keira Knightley will forever be either: a) the swashbuckling society lady from Pirates of the Caribbean, or b) the bride in the feathered wedding dress from Love Actually. But for her upcoming rom-com-esque movie Begin Again, she’ll play neither a pirate nor a serial friendzoner—instead, acting as Adam Levine’s emotionally wounded ex-girlfriend.
Despite the prospect of being forced to watch Levine essentially play himself for two hours, I’m actually pretty psyched for this movie, if only for its promotional tour; it’s been a while since Knightley’s done a proper red carpet circuit.
At the film’s New York City premiere last night, Knightley stepped out in two looks: first a fluttery Valentino from Fall 2014 (above), followed by an off-the-shoulder, metallic Erdem dress (below). I’ll be honest: the latter frock, which she wore to the premiere’s after-party, verges on frumpy territory despite its gold embellishments and knee-grazing hemline. It’s likely because its lamé material (unfairly) reminded me of one of those popcorn shirts from the ‘90s.
But that navy Valentino gown? Classic Knightley, in its style, silhouette and material. It even reminds me of her repurposed wedding dress—long sheer sleeves and all.
Sound off: which of her two premiere looks do you like better?
