When you’re messengered a feather-adorned, glittering mask the day before a party, you know you’re in for a treat. Last night, Lady Gaga celebrated the launch of her fragrance FAME—and brought New York Fashion Week to an epic close—with a black-tie masquerade ball at the historic Guggenheim Museum on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. "Head accessory required for the ladies: mask, hat, tiara, crown or lobster," read the invite—and considering the fashion flock’s notorious fondness for drama, all obeyed the rules. Even most of the men in attendance—excluding Gaga’s own tattooed, leather harness-clad staffers—chose to wear masks. I guess bondage accessories and a headpiece would’ve been overkill.
After gathering in the museum’s domed atrium, guests including Marc Jacobs, Olivier Theyskens, Lindsay Lohan and Yoko Ono sipped drinks from black glass goblets—a nod to the first-ever black eau de parfum—and attempted to steer clear of one another’s trains. Poor Jessica Stam had hers trampled by a few partygoers, but seemed to take the mishaps in stride.
After famous photographer Steven Klein personally introduced the film he directed in collaboration with Gaga, Mother Monster appeared—asleep, in a shimmering Prabal Gurung gown—in an enormous replica of her fragrance’s golden-clawed bottle. Her nap was an act, of course, part of a performance art piece titled "Sleeping With Gaga," and guests were invited to reach through a hole in the bottle’s side and hold hands with the seemingly comatose singer. Eventually, Gaga did wake up—and, after briefly emerging from her bottle to greet fans, reentered and had her freshly-shaven head inked by tattoo artist Mark Mahoney.
In short, it was a perfectly dramatic way to cap off a busy week of shows and presentations—especially for an unabashed Little Monster like me. Click through to check out what everyone wore to the party, and check out Steven Klein’s creepy-cool film below!
