In the last 48 hours, Hollywood has been forced to bid adieu to two true legends, individuals who forever changed the industry over the course of their decades-long acting careers. While the world is still left reeling from comedic genius Robin Williams’ unexpected suicide, yesterday’s passing of legendary actress Lauren Bacall has been no easier to grieve.
Bacall, who made her film debut in 1944’s To Have and Have Not, was best known amongst her Old Hollywood cohorts for her distinctively raspy voice and sultry demeanor—traits which continued to distinguish her as an actress throughout her expansive career. There was also Bacall’s attention-grabbing marriage to her To Have and Have Not co-star Humphrey Bogart, with whom she had two children; despite their 25-year age difference, the two remained married until Bogart’s death (due to esophageal cancer) in 1957.
To be sure, Bacall was iconic—anything you read on the internet today will tell you so. But on top of being stupidly beautiful, she was feisty, headstrong and incredibly opinionated, with grade-A acting chops to boot. Above, click through for nine old-school photos of the stunning Bacall at her most glamorous.
