It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Lena Corwin. The formerly Brooklyn, now San Francisco-based textile designer has a gorgeously pared-down, homespun aesthetic that never fails to inspire me. So I’ve been anxiously awaiting her collaboration with Urban Outfitters and couldn’t click fast enough when I learned it had finally arrived. Each piece was inspired by Lena’s book, Made by Hand, which came out last year. As she explains, “The Urban Outfitters design team asked me to create a collection based on my book, using techniques like weaving, dyeing, block printing and screen printing. Everything was made in India, where many of these textile techniques have a long history, and it was a pleasure to be able to collaborate with their designers and craftspeople.”
Available exclusively online, the 12-piece home collection features mixed-motif floor pillows, textured, reversible throws in understated shades and quilts in to-die-for tie-dye that set this reformed hippie’s heart a-fluttering. Of course, Lena’s impeccable eye for detail is apparent in every piece, which makes sense, as she was involved in every step of the process. “I made most of the designs by hand-carving block prints in my studio that were recreated in India and then printed by hand,” she says. “Other pieces were hand-dyed and woven.” Made of all-natural fibers, it’s a truly lovely mix, and one that I will be scooping up, one piece at a time, in an effort to completely Lena-fy my space. First up, floor pillows! Shop Lena’s collaboration with Urban Outfitters in the slideshow above.
