Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde, has proven herself to be one of the genuinely coolest, most talented entertainers currently creating music. And Sunday’s Grammy Awards sweep (she snagged wins for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance) solidified just how much the world loves her, us included. Not that there was ever any question that the 17-year-old was gracious, but just in case you’re skeptical, you now have your photographic proof.
On Wednesday, Lorde published the below, full-page letter in her local newspaper, the New Zealand Herald, that thanked her fans for their support—and also included an awesome little drawing of a Grammy award.
The handwritten note read: "Hiya. If you are reading this, [producer] Joel [Little] & I won. HOLY CRAP. It was a crazy day & my friends and family over here are still freaking out. I just wanted to say thank you for the time you’ve given me these past 14 months. Finding out about me online or in between these pages or in your headphones. Without your support, there’s no way I would ever have gotten to stand in the middle of the Staples Centre & perform in my school shoes. I can’t wait for tonight’s show. Together we’ll make it magic. I’ll see you there. xxx L"
Now, if that doesn’t prove that Lorde is one of the best teenage role models we’ve seen in quite some time, I don’t know what will. As Bustle so aptly pointed out, good manners never go out of style—which is so especially true in this case. A handwritten note—the worldwide customary token of gratitute—is like the show business equivalent of a unicorn. What a lovely, classy young lady.
