Minutes before Mad Men’s January Jones spoke on a Lucky FABB panel alongside our EIC Eva Chen and Cassandra Grey of luxury beauty website Violet Grey, I stole a few moments with the star in our green room. One look at January, and it’s clear the actress loves to have fun with her beauty look—in addition to a single Dior Tribal earring paired with a sparkling yet subtle ear cuff, she showed up for her panel with screaming pink-red lipstick, superhumanly long lashes and a spiky, slicked-back high chignon. To learn what beauty tricks she’s taken away from her day job on the Mad Men set and find out which era inspires her most (hint: it’s not what you’d think), read on!
Lucky: What three beauty products would you bring with you to a deserted island?
January Jones: Sunscreen—Sisley makes a really strong one. Also, it’s going to sound like I’m doing an ad for Sisley here, but their Supremya night cream. And By Terry lip balm.
Are there any beauty tips or tricks you’ve learned while on set?
I don’t wear a ton of makeup on the show, actually. Betty usually just does a lip. And definitely haven’t taken away anything hair-related! [Laughs]
But you’re more adventurous with your beauty look off-set?
Definitely. But I have learned a lot about nail care from working on the show. I wear acrylics, and always try to take them off when I get home. I’m going to have to put them back on in a few days—I’ll have to learn how to text all over again! I used to hate my longer nails, but now everyone’s wearing theirs long. So you’re welcome! I brought them back!
Which era in fashion and beauty do you find most inspiring?
Now! Because anything’s acceptable. You can take lots of risks, and there’s not just one accepted silhouette.
Any style icons you particularly admire?
Jane Birkin, maybe. One of my closest friends, Diane Kruger, always nails it. And Daphne Guinness—I can’t get away with what she wears, but I love her for that.
