Personal style can be tough to define—and this afternoon, our EIC sat down with supermodel Karolina Kurkova, Song of Style blogger Aimee Song and celebrity stylist Heidi Bivens to discuss exactly what goes into cultivating a look that’s all your own. Karolina described her wardrobe of choice as “natural,” “sporty,” “feminine” and “structured,” while Aimee explained that she gravitates towards looks that are more tomboyish “but still girly.” As for Heidi? “I buy a lot of basics, a lot of classics,” she said.
Their individual styles might differ enormously, but all the panelists agreed that the key to shopping to suit your style comes down to ignoring (most) trends and knowing what looks good on you. “If one silhouette works for your body type, stick to it,” Aimee wisely advised, explaining that since flared skirts flatter her straight-and-narrow physique, she buys them in multiple colors, prints and lengths. Agreed Karolina, “Knowing your comfort level is important. You never want a trend to wear you.”
That same “to thine own self be true” mentality applies to these speakers’ work lives, too. Over her years as a stylist, Heidi said she’s learned that “the best clients are the ones who have great personal style,” since they’re more open to creative collaborations and trying new things. And when the conversation turned to online critics, Aimee explained that every time she reads negative comments about herself, she consciously reminds herself of how far she’s come and how much she’s accomplished. “Let your haters be your motivators,” she said.
