My Halloween costume? Inadvertent Richie Tenenbaum. You see, I didn’t intentionally dress up as anyone. My plan, when I bought this ’70s-cool corduroy pantsuit at J.Crew over the weekend, was to do a vague, non-Halloweeny rendition of Ali MacGraw in Love Story. (PS: Her eyebrows are so good.) I’ve been eying the get-up since it hit stores in early fall. Now it was finally on sale, and thankfully in my size. On Monday, I paired it with a Steven Alan reverse seam plaid shirt and Tommy Hilfiger platform loafers. The compliments ensued. Except that, instead of commenting on my just-right interpretation of preppy collegiate style, circa 1970, I kept getting, "Great suit. It looks like Richie Tenenbaum’s." (As in, Luke Wilson’s character in The Royal Tenenbaums.)
It’s a little hard to accept that I was sort-of channeling Richie, especially since Margot is my hero—on and off-screen. (Haters can hate, but Gwyneth Paltrow is still prettier, cooler, smarter, richer AND a better cook than you. Hearts!) But when I think about it, I’d take Richie’s corduroy suit over Margot’s fur coat—or Ali’s turtleneck, for that matter—any day. I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum.
