Since I came of age in the early aughts—when the ruling fashion advice was to "wear a cute top with jeans"—denim is often the panacea to all my outfit woes. I’ve traded my spaghetti strap camis for button-downs and boxy knits, but the habit is still there. It’s time for a (small) change, starting with these pants I just bought.
Normally, silky polka dot trousers would completely stress me out—Where should I hem them? Will they make my legs look too short? Do I have to tuck in my shirt?—but these are different. Although it was the elegant golden brown color and playful pattern that first caught my eye, it’s the easy cropped length that sold me. I’m about 5’5 and it’s just the right inseam for me to pair with flat or heels—without a trip to the tailor.
I wore them for the first time today with a chunky fisherman sweater and patent leather loafers and I’m feeling surprisingly confident without my signature piece. Maybe it’s time to buy a second printed bottom style. Would you think? Should I go stripes or plaid?
